The Recreation Division of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department seeks to establish an eligibility list to fill one full-time opening to be responsible for the management, billing, and allocation of over 70 athletic fields. Will also supervise, train and evaluate subordinates, staff and direct facilities reservations; implement athletic field policies and procedures and reserve City operated facilities for special events; serve as liaison to over 30 community organizations and interpret City policy to organizations.
 
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Coordinate banquet/outdoor events to include scheduling, set-up, billing, and staffing.
  • Plan, organize, supervise, lead and participate in a recreation program for a neighborhood center or a community service program.
  • Assist in the direction of a recreational activity for a community area, either in a recreational center or for an area program.
  • Participate in program planning meetings and assist in developing program and activity plans and reviewing current programs.
  • Organize athletic, craft, social and instructional activities.
  • Supervise and participate in various games and sporting events.
  • Develop participant interest and enthusiasm.
  • Supervise the use and care of recreational equipment and buildings.
  • Prepare recreation club records of membership and participation.
  • Plan and conduct group tours and outings.
  • Requisition recreational supplies and materials, maintain an inventory, and control their use.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates.
  • Secure sponsorship for city events.
  • Maintain and monitor fiscal expenditures.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college with major work in recreation or closely related field.
Experience: One year experience in group recreational activity leadership.
Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college in recreation or a closely related field.
  • Two years of experience in Athletic Field and Facility Management.
  • Experience with utilizing registration/facility booking software such as RecWare, CLASS or Active Net.
  • Working with community groups, school districts, and both governmental and non-governmental agencies.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of supervision, training, performance evaluation, and budgeting.
  • Modern methods, techniques, principles and procedures used in the development, maintenance and administration of special programs.
  • First aid practices and techniques.
  • Personal computer operation and software applications.
  • Principles and practices of organizing and conducting public recreation programs.
  • Recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
  • Instructional techniques and methods for recreation programs for a variety of interests and abilities.
  • Community structures and processes; individual and group dynamics.
Ability to:
  • Work with community groups, school districts and outside agencies as a liaison for the department.
  • Plan, organize, lead and direct individuals and groups and participate in recreational and social activities within a flexible work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Adhere to program standards and objectives.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports.
  • Meet and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinates.
  • Solve disciplinary problems effectively.
  • Operate personal computer and applicable software applications.
  • Develop marketing programs to secure sponsorship, secure donations, promotion of programs and volunteers.
  • Secure corporate sponsorship.
 
Selection Process
Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligibility list which will remain in effect for six (6) months. Candidates will be screened further, and those meeting additional highly desirable qualifications may be invited to compete in a written, performance and/or oral exam. Qualified candidates will be certified for a selection interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 19, 2012. The final candidate(s) will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check, verification of work experience, and submit an official copy of educational transcripts verifying obtained degrees or certificates as indicated on the employment application. The appointed candidate will be required to successfully pass a medical examination and drug test.
